The Dubbo Turf Club host Fashions on the Field events at the following race meetings:

  • Queen of the West Ladies Day – May
  • Dubbo Gold Cup – September
  • Derby Day/Golden Eagle Day – November
  • Melbourne Cup/Big Dance Day – November

Queen of the West Ladies Day

Queen of the Day (Best Dressed Lady)

  • Application of a designers concept or style
  • Design co-ordination & creation (tying everything together)
  • Colour & style (Ensuring the outfit is relatable to a designer)
  • Standard and appropriate hem lengths (approx 1 inch above knee and lower)
  • No visible cleavage, mid-drifts, playsuits or cut outs or visible under garments
  • Attention to detail with accessorising e.g. including but not limited to appropriate foot ware (heels, partial open toe or fully closed), clutch or bag appropriately sized and incorporated into the outfit, jewellery, as Coco Chanel said, less is more. Jewellery should be tasteful, polished and not over the top and of course, millinery, judged according to the millinery judging criteria.
  • Appropriateness of outfit for the individual, climate and season
  • Incorporation of race day theme (Queen’s of Fashion)
  • Overall grooming and deportment
  • Given this is a Autumn meeting, transition fabrics ie: cotton and denser materials should be incorporated as opposed to lighter designs.
  • Entrants should not wear sunglasses on their face or head and should remove all personal items from pockets prior to competing to ensure they do not alter the appearance of the outfit
  • This category does not require you to replicate a design, it asks you to draw inspiration and apply it from a Queen of Fashion

Queen's Consort (Best Dressed Gent)

  • Originality and fit of the outfit
  • Concept of design co-ordination
  • Colour & style
  • Suit fit and tailoring (opt for a well fitted suit, race focused outfit rather than a loose fitting business look. Trousers of equivalent should be worn as shorts are not permitted.
  • Attention to detail with accessorising includingbut not limited to cufflinks, pocket square, lapel flower (a Yellow Rose is the Melbourne Cup Flower), tie, hat, dress shoes, umbrella (weather appropriate) and other appropriate accessories in line with a classic and polished look.
  • Overall grooming and deportment
  • Gentleman should not wear sunglasses on theirface or head and should remove all items from their pockets prior to competing as they may alter the appearance and fit of an outfit
  • Entrants should not appear intoxicated on stageand should avoid skylarking.

Best Headwear

  • Headwear styled fo the autumn racing season with appropriate materials
  • Weability and practicality of the piece
  • Coordination with your outfit

Cowboy Chic

  • The style, originality and suitability of the outfit should be appropriate for a race meeting and should incorporate some element of Cowboy Chic
  • Outfits should not lean toward a novelty or costume approach
  • Attention to detail will be appraised for accessories, shoes, bag & headware.
  • Headware is compulsory and should be appropriate for the spring season and in line with the Cowboy Chic theme.
  • A demonstration of an understanding and interpretation of the current race wear fashion trends will be looked upon favourably.
  • Elements of the outfit should reflect current trends without losing the contestant’s personal flair.
  • The contestant will be appraised for grooming and deportment.

Best Dressed Lady

The Contemporary Lady category is a more modern category incorporating newer fashion trends and is a little broader. It will be judged on:

  • Outfit to be in the form of race wear styling for the Spring Season and incorporating the theme "a touch of gold".
  • The style, originality and suitability of the outfit should be appropriate for a lady attending a race meeting during the Spring Racing Carnival.
  • Skirt length should not be above the knees, narrow shoulder straps and strapless bodices are strongly discouraged.
  • Attention to detail will be appraised for accessories, shoes, bag & millinery.
  • Millinery is compulsory and should be appropriate for the spring season.
  • A demonstration of an understanding and interpretation of the current race wear fashion trends will be looked upon favourably.
  • Elements of the outfit should reflect current trends without losing the contestant’s personal flair.
  • The contestant will be appraised for grooming and deportment.

Derby Day / Golden Eagle Day

Lady of the Day

This category reflects the spirit and polished Black & White theme of the traditional race day and will be judged on:

  • Originality (personal spin on the black and white theme)
  • Concept of design co-ordination (tying everything together)
  • Colour & style (Ensuring the strict black and white theme is adhered to)
  • Standard and appropriate hem lengths (approx. 1 inch above knee and lower)
  • No visible cleavage, mid-drifts, playsuits or cut outs or visible under garments
  • Attention to detail with accessorising e.g. including but not limited to appropriate footwear heels, partial open toe or fully closed), clutch or bag appropriately sized and incorporated into the outfit, jewellery, as Coco Chanel said, less is more.   • Suit fit and tailoring (Opt for a well fitted, race focused outfit rather than a loose-fitting business look)
  • Attention to detail with accessorising including but not limited to cufflinks, pocket square, lapel flower (cornflower is the Derby Day Flower), tie, hat, dress shoes, umbrella (weather appropriate) and other appropriate accessories in line
  • with a conservative and polished look.
